Currently On My Wheel

Currently on my wheel is a white Shetland lamb's fleece. I REALLY like this fleece. It's very soft with very high luster, a real pleasure to spin. I've a few ideas on what I'd like to make with this but am trying real hard to not make any decisions about it until it's all spun up. ;-)

With any luck I'll be able to make great progress on this fleece at two events I'll be attending. The first is on New Years Day at the Textile Center in Minneapolis. The event is called "Rock Day" and I'll be meeting several friends there for a day of spinning. The next is the weekend of January 12th. I'll be attending the Northern Light's Spinning Guild's annual retreat. It's a whole weekend of spinning, knitting, and socializing. There are some great classes to attend too.

My First Try at Dyeing Roving

Yesterday I tried for the first time to dye a pound of my white roving. I used a Jacquard dye called "Fire Red". According to the directions, 1/2 oz. of the dye should color 2 lbs. of material. I used the entire 1/2 oz bottle for 1 lb of roving because I wanted to make sure it was a nice brilliant red. As you can see it didn't exactly turn out red. It's more of a dark pink I think. The directions also said to use only a 1/4 cup of vinegar in the dyepot which I did. I am now wondering if I should have used more. I would very much appreciate comments from those of you experienced dyers on what you think happened here.

I'll still be able to use this but I think once I spin it up I'll try dyeing it again so I get my red yarn.

Stephen's Scarf

Finally, I have pics of Stephen's scarf. This is being made from Stephen's own handspun yarn from a katmoget ram he used to own. I haven't made as much progress on it as I would like. I've been detoured on to another project....

I work for the Prior Lake/Savage Area Schools as their Website Coordinator. Recently we moved into our new District Services Center. In an effort to save on the utility bills through out the district they have reduced the temperature in all the buildings. Needless to say there are times when we all get very cold. I made a pair of these hand warmers for myself and have been asked by many to make some for them. Now I am not fond of knitting for others just to make a couple of bucks. And lets face it I'm not going to get rich making these. So I've been making them and gifting them to those who have asked. I'll keep doing this as long as I am enjoying it. So, shhhhhh don't tell too many of them ;-)

Name:
Location: Prior Lake, Minnesota, United States

I am a Shetland addict. I am a wool addict. I am a yarn addict. I love to spin, knit and raise sheep. I am owned by Emily and Rabb, my Border Collies who love to help me with the sheep. When I'm not knitting, spinning or taking care of my sheep, I work from home designing websites and as a XanGo Independent Distributor.
