Today's Bread/Denise's Thrummed Mittens

Fresh out of the oven! This is some sourdough rye bread I made today out of a new starter I made a couple of weeks ago. This is actually the second batch of bread I've made out of it but the first batch was just too ugly to photograph. These loaves turned out much better and will hopefully taste as delicious as the "ugly" loaves did.

A good friend and coworker, Denise emailed me not long ago asking me if I knew where she could buy some wool mittens. Well, of course I couldn't resist making them for her! She was quite happy to let me experiment on her too! I've always wanted to try making Thrummed Mittens and here they are (notice the thrums of white roving that have been knitted into the inside of the mitten). I also dyed the yarn using some Gaywool dye in the microwave. I "chained" the skein of yarn tightly into a neat ball and soaked it in some water with a little bit of Dawn dishwashing detergent before placing it in a small bowl and pouring the dye bath over it. I cooked it in the microwave oven for 8 minutes and rinsed it until it ran clear. I think it turned out great!

Here is some grey shetland handspun I've recently finished. Once washed/weighed and tagged it will go up for sale in my Etsy Shop

And, here is a peek at my newest knitting project. This is another Paws to Remember scarf from Fiber Trends. This is the same pattern I used to make Stephen's Scarf. I'm using some navy blue Cascade 220 from my stash. This will also be added to my Etsy Shop when finished.

Stephen's scarf is officially at the half way point! It's all down hill from here!
I sure am enjoying this pattern. It's called "Paws to Remember" and its a Fiber Trends pattern. I may have to make one for me!

Yesterday I tried for the first time to dye a pound of my white roving. I used a Jacquard dye called "Fire Red". According to the directions, 1/2 oz. of the dye should color 2 lbs. of material. I used the entire 1/2 oz bottle for 1 lb of roving because I wanted to make sure it was a nice brilliant red. As you can see it didn't exactly turn out red. It's more of a dark pink I think. The directions also said to use only a 1/4 cup of vinegar in the dyepot which I did. I am now wondering if I should have used more. I would very much appreciate comments from those of you experienced dyers on what you think happened here.
I'll still be able to use this but I think once I spin it up I'll try dyeing it again so I get my red yarn.

I work for the Prior Lake/Savage Area Schools as their Website Coordinator. Recently we moved into our new District Services Center. In an effort to save on the utility bills through out the district they have reduced the temperature in all the buildings. Needless to say there are times when we all get very cold. I made a pair of these hand warmers for myself and have been asked by many to make some for them. Now I am not fond of knitting for others just to make a couple of bucks. And lets face it I'm not going to get rich making these. So I've been making them and gifting them to those who have asked. I'll keep doing this as long as I am enjoying it. So, shhhhhh don't tell too many of them ;-)
